What does Hatha yoga mean? Is hatha yoga different from yoga? In fact, Hatha yoga is an ancient art form of yoga in old Indian philosophy. Basically, Hatha word has taken from the Sanskrit word “hath” associated with “force”, so refer to the structure of physical technique. In other definition, from the word Hatha- ha represents the “sun” and tha the “moon”. Thus the hatha yoga practice’s main aim to keep balance and join these two energies. However, there, many changes have been taken place from ancient times to the 21st century in Hatha yoga asana. And also different physical postures movements modified by the well-known yogis to fit these asanas in the modern age. In India, Hatha yoga is a traditional art form and well defined in different Indian traditional Sanskrit texts on yoga-like Shiv Samhita, Gheranda Samhita, and Hatha yoga Pradipika. Hatha yoga was compiled by different yogis from time to time such as Maharishi Patanjali, and B.K.S Iyenger.

Different types of hatha yoga asanas

Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)- Dhanurasana is a modern yoga asana of back bending. In this asana, first openly spread your legs on the ground, keep them straight like a rode, take hold of the feet with hands and manage your body to keep bent like a bow.

Bhujangasana (cobra pose) - Bhujangasana is a modern era asana where the body leans back with the support of back while back bending. This asana comes under the cycle of Surya Namaskar asana.

Matsyendraasana (Lord of the fishes pose) - In hatha yoga, this is asana of being seated twisted. This asana can be seen generally in seated spinal twisted with many variations of Matsyendraasana postures. To perform this asana, you first need to place your one foot on the floor just outside the opposite leg and then the body’s trunk twists towards the top leg. And keep following, bent your lowest leg with the foot right outside the opposite hip or expand with toes perpendicular. Here, the arms support the trunk into the twist and can leap many times of layouts by holding either feet or opposite hands.

Grudasana (Eagle pose) - This asana is done in a manner of balancing the body while standing in posture form. This pose has been used to describe the different poses. Grudasana is a skewed position. First, keep one leg, suppose right one, is intersected the left leg, following the arms of the opposite side, suppose left, is intersected the right one and palms are pushed. This asana can help you to build concentration or balance.  

Gomukhaasana (cow face pose) - In Gomukhasana, there, many variations have appeared in modern yoga. First, you need to kneel down by intersecting the legs in a way that your heel of the top leg is folded in under the bottom thigh closeby the buttock. Lift your arm on the bottom side leg, then forearm twisted down, meanwhile, the other arm reaches down behind the back, the forearm twisted up, so the hands can clutch between the shoulder blades. 

Vajrasana (Thunderbolt pose) - In hatha yoga, Vajrasana is kneeling asana. First, you need to do this asana, kneel down on heels with calves underneath the thighs. Keep a gap of four fingers between the kneecap. And place the first toe of both feet join each other and sit upright.

Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend) - While doing Paschimottanasana, please keep cautions, it may difficult for some people to perform. First, you need to stretch your legs straight and swing the top part of your body back and forth. While doing swings, try to reach further with your hands, keep touching your knees, calves, ankles, and last touch toes. Further, try to bend forward to touch knees with your hands. Succeedingly, try to place elbows at the side of your knees and further join your knees with either your forehead or nose.
