The need for a transplant - End-stage kidney disease

Kidneys are the essential body organs which are on each side of the lower abdomen and which get a regular blood flow from larger renal blood vessels. These are bean-shaped organs which has many tiny filters, also known as nephrons and which help to filter out the harmful waste products as well as chemicals in the blood. After that, it filters out excess fluid in the form of urine. Kidney disease is a condition when these neurons which are present in kidneys become damaged and owing to this; the kidneys lose their filtering abilities. An individual has an end-stage kidney disease when his/her kidneys have lost about 90 percent of their filtering ability.

Causes of end-stage kidney diseases

Below we have listed some common causes of end-stage kidney disease:

  • Hypertension or high BP- High bp is one of the common reasons for end-stage kidney disease as it damages the tiny blood vessels and stops the kidneys from working properly.

  • Diabetes-It is also one of the common end-stage kidney cause and which damages the filters in the kidneys. Continuous high sugar levels lead to long term kidney damage and finally, kidney failure.

  • Polycystic kidney disease- It is an inherited condition in which larger cysts are formed within the kidney that disturb its functioning.

  • Arteries blockages-  are one more cause of end-stage kidney disease; it is also called renal artery stenosis.

  • Congenital problems- There can be some congenital problems during the development of kidneys and which are since birth and which leads to end-stage kidney disease.

Treatment of end-stage kidney disease

There is a requirement of treatment of end-stage kidney disease as it can be life-threatening due to building up of waste products in the body. In some cases of the end, stage kidney disease dialysis is also an option . in dialysis, a device is used to filter blood, and new filtered blood is again injected in the body. It is an expensive and time consuming process and also has many side effects and risks too. In its place, the best treatment of end-stage kidney disease is a kidney transplant. It is less expensive and has long term benefits also.
