TYRE PRESSURE: HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?

Tyre pressure should not be undervalued when you want to drive safely. Depending on the pressure, the performance of the tyres and the road holding of the car varies. Most drivers miss this, aspect, but let's see what happens if the tyres are too deflated (low pressure) or vice versa too swollen (high pressure).

LOW TYRE PRESSURE

Low tyre pressure can make road holding very dangerous, increase braking distance, make the tyre performance unpredictable, and increase rolling resistance which implies an increase in fuel consumption.

In this situation, the car tyres wear unevenly. Too low a pressure causes particularly high wear on the rubber shoulder.

If the car or SUV tyres are flat tyres (even only 20%), the wear of the rubber increases by 25% than the normal value. Therefore, leading to a high reduction in the life of the car tyre and an increase in the total expense for tyres.

Furthermore, a flat tyre bends excessively on its edges, causing an increase in the internal temperature which may result in premature tyre punctures. In any case, the continuous use of flat tyres can cause irreparable damage.

Low inflation pressure causes extreme difficulty in managing the components and performance of the vehicle. The braking time increases thus, compromising the safety of the car.

Furthermore, driving with flat tyres does not save on fuel cost. A lower pressure (compared to the values ??indicated by the vehicle manufacturer), even by 20% increases costs by 3%.

HIGH PRESSURE OF TYRES

Let us now observe the contrary situation: tyres that are too swollen are difficult to handle. Particularly, braking and steering. In fact, an exaggerated tyre pressure reduces the contact surface with the road.

An excessively swollen tyre will wear out faster. A further consequence is the discomfort in driving.

Hence, the correct pressure significantly prolongs the life of the tyre, guaranteeing high levels of grip and safety.

HOW TO CHECK THE TYRE PRESSURE

To ensure that the tyres are correctly inflated to optimum pressure, it is necessary to know the recommended tyre pressure (indicated in the car maintenance booklet or behind the fuel filler cap).

Alternatively, consult tyre specialists who, given the experience, will surely show you the right value.

Regularly check the used tyres and spare tyres. Check the pressure, only when the tyre is cooled down. Since a fairly short journey can increase the internal heat of the tyres and consequently the pressure.

Excessively charging the vehicle leads to a flat tyre as well. So, if you face a long journey (with a full car) you need to increase the pressure by following the instructions recommended in the car maintenance booklet. Don't forget to reduce the pressure again when you return.

In no case, it is illegal to load the vehicle beyond the limit allowed by the booklet.

Correct pressure guarantees durability extending tyre life and avoiding premature wear.

Always remember:

• Off-road adventures require off-road tyres. Road tyres can occasionally face a gravel driveway or a dirt road, but when you want to go off-road, you need to fit specially designed tyres.

• The tyres must be checked regularly. Every month and before a long journey, you need to do a do-it-yourself inspection: check the pressure, the depth of the tread, the general condition of the tyres in search of cuts, cracks, splits, punctures, uneven wear and bulges.

• Know the limits of your tyres. If you are the type of driver who uses the accelerator pedal more than the brake, choose tyres designed for high performance, which offer better grip and hand
